Most people book an eye exam when their glasses stop working. But a comprehensive eye exam is also one of the few health checks that lets a professional look straight at your blood vessels and nerves, with no needles and no incision. That view can reveal early signs of conditions that affect your whole body, sometimes before you notice a single symptom.

If you are looking for a Surrey eye exam, an eye doctor in Surrey, or a Newton optometrist who checks more than your prescription, this guide explains what a comprehensive eye exam can find and how to book one at Synergy Optometry.

The short answer: A comprehensive eye exam can show early signs of diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease and stroke risk, autoimmune diseases, and some brain and nerve conditions. Your optometrist spots the changes in your eye, explains what they mean, and refers you to your family doctor for testing when needed.

Why your eyes show what the rest of your body hides

The retina at the back of your eye is lined with tiny blood vessels, and the optic nerve connects your eye directly to your brain. The eye is one of the only places in the body where a doctor can see blood vessels and nerve tissue directly, without a scan or surgery. When a condition damages small blood vessels, raises pressure inside the skull, or causes inflammation, the eye often shows it early.

6 health conditions an eye exam can flag early

1Diabetes

What your optometrist looks forTiny bleeds, leaking blood vessels or swelling in the retina. This is called diabetic retinopathy.

Why it mattersHigh blood sugar damages small blood vessels throughout the body, and the eye is where that damage is easiest to see. Some people first learn they may have diabetes after an eye exam. If you already live with diabetes, regular diabetic eye exams help protect your vision.

2High blood pressure

What your optometrist looks forNarrowed or twisted retinal blood vessels, small bleeds, fluid leakage, or a swollen optic nerve. This is called hypertensive retinopathy.

Why it mattersHigh blood pressure usually has no symptoms. Left untreated, it raises the risk of stroke, heart attack and kidney damage. An eye exam is a simple way to catch a warning sign.

3High cholesterol

What your optometrist looks forA grey or white ring around the edge of the coloured part of your eye (corneal arcus), yellowish deposits on the eyelids (xanthelasma), or plaque inside retinal blood vessels.

Why it mattersA ring around the cornea is common with age, but in younger adults it can point to high cholesterol. Your optometrist may suggest a blood test with your doctor to check.

4Heart disease and stroke risk

What your optometrist looks forSmall, bright cholesterol fragments lodged in retinal arteries, or a blocked artery or vein in the retina.

Why it mattersThese fragments often break off from plaque in the carotid arteries in your neck, the same arteries that supply your brain. Finding one in the eye can be an early warning of stroke risk, and your optometrist will refer you for further testing.

Urgent: Sudden vision loss in one eye, a dark curtain over your vision, or sudden double vision needs emergency care. Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department.

5Autoimmune diseases

What your optometrist looks forInflammation inside the eye (uveitis), severe or ongoing dry eye, or inflammation of the optic nerve.

Why it mattersThese signs can be linked to conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, Sjögren's syndrome and thyroid eye disease. Catching eye inflammation early protects your vision and can help your doctor find the underlying cause sooner.

6Brain and neurological conditions

What your optometrist looks forSwelling of the optic nerve (papilledema), inflammation of the optic nerve (optic neuritis), or unusual patterns of side vision loss on a visual field test.

Why it mattersA swollen optic nerve can signal raised pressure inside the skull, which may be linked to a brain tumour, bleeding or another serious condition. Optic neuritis can be an early sign of multiple sclerosis. These findings are rare, but when they happen, early referral matters.

Good to know: An eye exam can show signs of a health condition. It does not diagnose it. If your optometrist sees something, they will explain what they found and refer you to your family doctor or a specialist for testing.

Frequently asked questions

Can an eye exam detect diabetes?

Yes. Diabetes can damage the tiny blood vessels in the retina, causing bleeds, leaks or swelling that an optometrist can see during a comprehensive eye exam. Some people first learn they may have diabetes this way. Your optometrist will refer you to your doctor for a blood test to confirm.

Can an optometrist see high blood pressure in your eyes?

Yes. High blood pressure can narrow, twist or damage retinal blood vessels and sometimes cause the optic nerve to swell. An optometrist can spot these changes and recommend you have your blood pressure checked by your doctor.

Can an eye exam show you are at risk of a stroke?

It can show warning signs. Small cholesterol fragments or blocked blood vessels in the retina can point to a higher risk of stroke. If your optometrist finds them, they will refer you for further testing.

Can an eye exam detect a brain tumour?

Sometimes. A brain tumour can raise pressure inside the skull and cause swelling of the optic nerve, or affect your side vision. These findings are rare, but an optometrist can see them and refer you for urgent follow-up.

Do I need a referral to see an optometrist in BC?

No. You can book an eye exam directly with an optometrist. You do not need a referral from your family doctor.

Is an eye exam covered by MSP in BC?
